We are working, in alliance with the Earth Trust, on a possible South Oxfordshire Local Food Strategy. The first stage was a meeting with local farmers, small scale growers, marketeers, food shops, pub owners and others in March to identify the main constraints to increased local food production and consumption, and how best to address some of these. The report on this meeting will be the basis of further discussions on 10 June – after which it is planned that a number of groups will be set up to deal with specific areas (e.g., role of education and schools, persuading landowners to make more land available to small scale horticulturalists, improving the profit margins for small scale producers). Later we aim to push for policy changes at local and county level (and national?)to encourage the growth of a local food economy.
